There’s No Tip In Hackney
Hackney doesn’t have its own Reuse and Recycling Centre. Residents use the North London sites at Hornsey Street (N7), South Access Road in Walthamstow (E17) and Western Road in Wood Green (N22).
Fine for a car load
- Free for Hackney households
- Furniture, garden waste, electricals and scrap metal accepted
- Opening hours differ, so check the centre before you go
- Leftover DIY supplies can be swapped at South Access Road
Harder with a van
- Not every centre accepts vans or trailers
- Where they do, you book 24 hours ahead
- Each site takes up to 10 vans a day
- Five van or trailer visits a year per household

Hackney Council Or Waste Collectors?
If you’ve got a few dry items and can have them on the pavement by 6am on a weekday, the council is good value. Here’s how the two compare.
| Hackney Council | Waste Collectors | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | £24 for up to five items, £48 for up to ten. Sofas and armchairs count as a separate collection. | Single item £49. Bigger loads priced by van space, with sofas in the same visit. |
| When | Monday to Friday. Everything must be on the pavement by 6am. | Seven days a week, usually the same or next day, at a time that suits you. |
| Where from | The pavement outside your home. Collections from inside are only for elderly or disabled residents. | Anywhere: upstairs, the back garden, the basement or the shed. |
| If it rains | Wet items aren’t taken on the day. The council aims to come back 48 hours later. | Rain or shine, it all goes the same day. |
| Refused | Rubble, tiles, fencing, large branches, soil, and anything with sharp edges or nails sticking out. | We take all of these, priced by weight or van space. |
| Discounts | Half price with Council Tax Reduction, free if you’re exempt, and four free collections a year on council estates. | No free collections. If you qualify, the council is the better choice. |
